The soloist is, of course, Giovanni Sollima, Italy's leading cello prodigy to whom the work was dedicated! The success of the religious opera \"Ikon\", in which Giovanni Sollima played the cello solo, has made Segatta one of the most sought-after musicians of the next generation of Italian music. The stage for his full-length cello concerto dedicated to his teacher Sollima is Byzantium, an invisible imaginary city that symbolizes the ideal bridge between East and West, the two hemispheres that have been in dialogue in the minds of mankind for thousands of years. Paradjanov\" is named after the Armenian film director Sergei Paradjanov and his masterpiece \"The Color of Pomegranates\". The following second movement, \"Ave Maria,\" is the slow movement of the concerto, inspired by Byzantine and Corsican chants and repeated like the prayers of the rosary.And the third movement, \"Ivry,\" the latter part of the work, was inspired by a violin improvisation by the great virtuoso Ivry Gitlis in Tokyo in 1990. The title is dedicated to Gitlis and refers to both \"Jewish\" and \"intoxicated\" (from the French ibley), two adjectives that describe the character of this music. Sollima gave his stamp of approval to the conception, and after seven years of work, the recording of \"Concerto Byzantino\" was realized.
