This unique album features Bach's two sonatas originally for viola da gamba and harpsichord, with Berio's Sequenza XIV, a contemporary masterpiece for solo cello (many performers have taken it up in competitions), and Boulez's early masterpiece for solo piano, \"12 Notations\", in between. In the Berio piece, all functions and possibilities of the cello, including special techniques, are pursued. The folk rhythms also appear unexpectedly, and the music is avant-garde but accessible. Boulez's Notations is a masterpiece written in 12-tone technique. The coupling of Bach, Berio, and Boulez may reveal new aspects of European music history that we have not been able to see until now. Cellist Martina Rudic was born in Croatia. She studied at the Verdi Conservatory and joined the Mahler-Jugend Orchestra led by Abbado, and is currently active as a soloist and chamber musician. Pianist Michele Gamba hails from Milan. He studied piano and composition at the same Verdi Conservatory as Rudić, and is now active as a conductor.
