At the time of its composition, the opera *Sophonisba* does not appear to have been performed; although she herself sent the score to opera houses in the hope that it would be staged, this apparently never came to pass.\nJudging by the lyrics, it appears the work was written with Vittoria Tesi—a singer popular in Vienna at the time—in mind; however, while there is evidence of unofficial performances, it does not seem to have ever been staged at an opera house.
