This was certainly due to Hummel’s own deep affection and interest in Mozart’s works, but it was likely also influenced by the demand at the time for smaller-scale versions of large-scale works to be performed in private homes, as well as the great trust Mozart himself placed in Hummel. The resulting “chamber music versions” of these concertos and symphonies are magnificent works with a distinct charm of their own, and they have been performed with increasing frequency in recent years.
