After studying in Florence and Bologna, he went to Paris to study under Jules Massenet. His music is characterized by a refined melodiousness that could be said to be inherited from Massenet. Il Volto Della Vergine (The Face of the Virgin) is a one-act work entitled "The Legend of Florence," published in 1937. It is a sad but beautiful story about a young girl who watches over a fresco painted by a Florentine monk, and the face of the Virgin is painted on the fresco as the face of the Virgin after she dies of an illness.
