Pitsinni's masterpiece Didon, a rare recordingNiccolo Pitsinni (1728-1800) was a renowned opera composer who moved from Italy to Paris, where he was pitted against Gluck and involved in controversy. His Didon, a lyrical tragedy in three acts from a French libretto by Jean-François Marmontel, was first performed at Fontainebleau on October 16, 1783, in the presence of Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette, and has been performed many times since. It is said to have influenced Berlioz's "The Trojans," which used the same subject matter. King International
