A highly talented composer, he steadily built a reputation as an opera composer; however, just as he was entering his prime in his 40s, Rossini rose to prominence rapidly, and Generali was overshadowed. Nevertheless, he continued to compose numerous operas until around 1830. In his later years, he served as the church music director in Novara, a city in Piedmont, and passed away there.\n“Adelaide of Burgundy” premiered in April 1819 as the opening night production at the Teatro Sociale in Rovigo. The recording included here is a live recording from a concert performance of the work at the Teatro Sociale 193 years later. Rossini also wrote an opera of the same name; while both are based on the historical event in which Otto the Great rescued Adelaide, the widowed Queen of Italy, from her captors in the mid-10th century, the librettos are different. As this was already during Rossini’s heyday, the music clearly shows significant influence from him, yet it possesses a slightly more gentle and subdued beauty.\nAnna Carbonera, who sings the title role, is an Italian soprano who won second prize at the 65th European Community Competition in Spoleto in 2011. Although she is still young—around 30 years old—her exceptional talent is clearly evident in this recording. Likewise, Daniele Antonangeli, the Italian baritone from Pesina who plays Berengario, and Katarzyna Otocik, the Polish mezzo-soprano who plays Adalberto, are young singers who won fourth and fifth place, respectively, at the 2011 European Community Competition. Gianluca Bocchino, who plays Ottone, is an Italian tenor from Benevento. He performs primarily at the Verdi Opera House in Trieste.
