The verismo style, with its rich orchestration, gained widespread popularity; as a result, this one-act opera—composed in 1912—was a huge success in London and enjoyed an incredibly long run in both London and the United States.\n\nThis new recording of *The Gypsies* by Opera Lara showcases music featuring a rich, colorful orchestration, complete with powerful choruses and enchanting arias. Bulgarian soprano Krasimira Stoyanova, who displays a versatile vocal range, is a master of verismo opera, and her expressive singing—overflowing with anger, sorrow, despair, and hope—is exquisite. Tenor Arsen Sogomonian breathes life into the character of Frea, the beautiful temptress who later rejects him, through his powerful and passionate portrayal of the nobleman Radu.
