His father was the conductor of the town’s wind orchestra. In 1933, the family moved to Odessa, where the young Mikhail began studying the violin. He made steady progress, but with the outbreak of World War II, his music academy was evacuated to Tashkent, Uzbekistan. After the war, he auditioned for the renowned teacher Abram Yampolsky in Moscow and was accepted; the conservatory then relocated to Leningrad. In 1949, he placed fourth at the Jan Kubeček International Competition in Prague. In 1950, he placed second in the violin division of the First Johann Sebastian Bach International Competition. In 1951, he placed second in the violin division of the Queen Elisabeth International Music Competition (first place went to Leonid Kogan). Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Weiman performed extensively throughout Eastern Europe, while also training many outstanding students as a teacher. In 1977, he died of a heart attack at the age of 51. Had he lived longer, his activities in the West would likely have expanded. In 2005, a substantial collection of his recordings was released on CD by Melodiya.\nThis 2-CD set features broadcast recordings from East Germany, primarily from the 1950s. In Tchaikovsky’s concerto, Weiman is at the top of his game; both the light and crisp third movement and the second movement, imbued with a Russian melancholy, are exquisite. Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 5 is a magnificent performance in which the great conductor Hermann Abendroth provided strong support for Weiman’s refined tone and elegant phrasing. The Violin Concerto by Georgian composer Alexi Machavarian (1913–1995) may have been one of Weiman’s signature pieces, as he had also made a commercial recording of it in Moscow.
