Jan Smetterling was born in Bielitz (now Bielsko, Poland) in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. His real name was Hans Schmötterling. His family was Jewish, having emigrated from Ternopil (now Ternopili, Ukraine). After studying piano in his hometown, he went to Vienna to study with Leopold Godowski. After the end of World War I, he rapidly rose to fame in the 1920's. He changed his name to Jan Smetelin upon his marriage in 1925 and became a British citizen in 1934. After the outbreak of World War II, he became more active in the United States, while after World War II he made easy trips to Australia and New Zealand. He died in London. Smetelin was an heir to Godowski's style, both in his career and in his playing itself, and was a master of letting poetic sentiment flutter from the score. Smetelin's recordings of Chopin were released on CD a few years ago, but his true value is perhaps better expressed in the free and exuberant Liszt Piano Sonata on this CD.
