He was born in Lviv, now part of western Ukraine. He studied at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna with Emil von Sauer, Liszt's favorite pupil. He was of Jewish descent and had to hide during World War II, but in the 1950s he became a dominant Chopin player. meloclassic has already released two CDs (MC 1004 and MC 1051 [2CD]), which rediscovered the excellence of this famous pianist who had been completely forgotten. The highlight of the two CDs this time is the 1979 album, \"The Pianist's World\". The highlight of the 2CD release is a live recording of a concert in Leipzig in 1968, featuring two concertos conducted by master conductor Herbert Koegel, and a good stereo recording (although there is a lot of noise from the audience). Both Mozart's K. 453 and the less familiar Mendelssohn's Piano Concerto No. 1 are highly dignified and superb. Everyone who hears this will agree that Askenase was one of the great pianists of the 20th century.
