In the “Number Pieces,” the title refers to the number of musicians performing the piece. Although the scores consist of several parts, they are not fully realized; while they provide general instructions, they are characterized by a high degree of freedom (a “time bracket”) that allows musicians to determine the start, end, and duration of the performance at their own discretion. “Thirteen” is Cage’s final work. This is not the first recording of this piece, but the second. *Five* does not refer to the number of musicians or instruments.\nEssential Music, with Cage’s permission, performs the piece by blowing into a jar, successfully creating a mysterious atmosphere.
