The duo had programmed the Eighth in their 2015 season and were in perfect condition for the studio recording. The Eighth, like the other symphonies, has its own version problems, and Bruckner began work on the Eighth immediately after writing the Seventh, completing the first draft in 1887. However, when he sent it to Hermann Levi, the conductor who had given the successful premiere of No. 7, Bruckner's audacity was not understood and, contrary to his expectations, was not well received. Luisi, however, says that the intuitive interest of this first draft is a true expression of the power of Bruckner's music.Luigi's constructed Bruckner playing is on full display in the ensemble capabilities of the Philharmonia Zurich, which is essentially an opera orchestra.
