Edgar Morin was born in Paris in 1921. He is a French philosopher and sociologist of Sephardic descent. He is known for the breadth of his interests—captured by the concept of “interdisciplinarity”—and for his thinking that transcends traditional academic boundaries. He is also famous as a New Wave film director for *Chronicle of a Summer* (1961), which he co-directed, and *The Time of Truth* (1965), for which he co-wrote the screenplay. His intellectual journey spans a wide range of topics, including communism, social anthropology, protests against the Algerian War, the sociology of popular culture, a series of writings on the May Revolution, and analyses of Soviet communism.\nFatima Mernissi was born in Morocco in 1940. She is known worldwide as a sociologist who boldly pursues common values that bridge Islam and the West, moving beyond the “Clash of Civilizations” theory, and as a feminist writer who authored *Fatima, a Girl from the Harem*.\nRaymond Panikkar, who passed away in 2010, was born in Spain in 1918 to a Hindu Indian father who was raised in England and settled in Barcelona, and a Spanish-born Catholic mother.
