Tchaikovsky No. 1 and No. 2. Chao has been a rising star since he was a child, making his CD debut at the age of 10 with albums of Bach, Mozart, and Schubert. At the age of 13, he released his second album of all 27 of Chopin's Etudes, which became a sensation both in Switzerland and abroad. On his Claves label debut, Liszt's Twelve Superlative Exercises (50 1110), he captivated the audience with his overwhelming technique and emotional expression, and on his second Claves release, Beethoven's Complete Piano Sonatas (50 1304), he astonished the audience with a performance that was not only technically but musically so dense that one would think he was in his teens. The second Claves release, the complete Beethoven piano sonatas (50 1304), astonished audiences with a performance so dense that it was hard to believe that he was still in his teens. The most famous of Tchaikovsky's works, the Piano Concerto No. 1, and the less well-known No. 2. In recent years, Russian pianists such as Boris Berezovsky and Denis Matsuev have frequently performed this work in concert, and recordings of it are increasing. The Piano Concerto No. 2 was composed between 1879 and 1880, five years after No. 1. It is a product of the period immediately following the Violin Concerto and Symphony No. 4, and in this performance, it is a large work with a playing time of less than 45 minutes. It is a very difficult piece that requires a great deal of technical skill, but Chao's performance shows that he is even technically comfortable with the piece. The conductor is Mikhail Jurowski, born in Moscow in 1945 (father of Vladimir Jurowski, who has been remarkably active in recent years). He has been exposed to the music of Russian masters such as Oistrakh, Rostropovich, Kogan, and Guilleris. In 2015, Chao turned 21 years old. He is one of the most promising young pianists in the world, and we look forward to hearing more of his work in the future!
