A French composer from the first half of the 20th century\nThe Durozoire Orchestral Works Collection\n\nThe works of French violinist and composer Lucien Durozoire (1878–1955) had long been completely overlooked, but over the past decade or so, they have undergone a growing reappraisal. His chamber music was the first to be rediscovered, leaving people astonished as to why such magnificent music had been forgotten. Now, Durozoire’s long-awaited orchestral works have finally been released. “Dejanira” is a symphonic etude based on a fragment from Sophocles’ *The Trachinian Women*; the title refers to Deianira, the wife of Heracles in Greek mythology. It was composed in 1923. The Adagio for String Ensemble was composed in 1921. The Poem for Violin, Viola, and Orchestra is an exceptionally beautiful work in which the violin and viola interweave with a small orchestral accompaniment. It was composed in 1920. The Suite for Flute and Small Orchestra, composed in 1931, was Durozoir’s final orchestral work. While it is a masterpiece that epitomizes his career, one cannot help but regret that had he continued his career as a composer uninterrupted, he might have produced even more masterpieces.\nAfter studying violin in Germany under Josef Joachim and others, Durozoire had been building a successful career as a violinist. However, he turned to composition while serving in World War I, and after the war, when he was forced to give up his career as a violinist, he devoted himself fully to composition. Durozoire’s works, which maintained a unique style, were known only to a select few even during his lifetime and were completely forgotten after his death. However, his thoroughly distinctive sound of modern French music is now being reevaluated.\nIncludes a detailed commentary (in French, with English translation) by Georgie Duzoire, a musicologist and wife of Luc Duzoire, the composer’s son.\nMikhail Golikov is a Russian conductor born in 1980.
