However, Puccini, who saw this operetta in 1919, was so moved by its brilliance that he immediately wrote a letter of praise to Lehár (they had met six years earlier)—a testament to how deeply this work moved people. Even though the plot depicts a common love triangle, the beauty of the melodies and the heroine’s magnificent arias, which make full use of coloratura, exude such a strong charm that it would be a shame to let this work fall into obscurity.
