Now penniless (or so it seemed), Carlotta’s marriage plans with Mayor Nazoni are naturally called off. However, it turns out that the stranger is actually a high-ranking count, and no bandit named “Gaspalone” ever existed. The story ends with Carlotta and the count happily tying the knot.\nAlthough it features the common trope of a “miser targeting a widow’s fortune,” it is a delightful and beautiful work, expertly crafted and filled with enchanting melodies. The story—in which people’s emotions intertwine over a thief they’ve never even seen, only for the scheming to ultimately be exposed—must have thrilled audiences of the time. This performance is imbued with a quintessentially Viennese atmosphere, brimming with lightness and joy.
