His greatest achievement was composing numerous works for young people and children; the famous “Music for Sports Day,” “The Clown’s Gallop,” is also one of his compositions. As a result, his style is often mistakenly perceived as simple and popular, but his catchy melodies and clear structure certainly make for a pleasant listening experience. This collection features all the piano concertos he composed throughout his life. It ranges from the First Concerto, which reveals the influence of Rachmaninoff and Shostakovich, to the Second Concerto, in which he forged his own distinctive style; the Third Concerto, part of his “Music for Youth Development” initiative to which he devoted considerable effort; to the Fourth, with its explosive snare drum, “Schubert’s Fantasy, arranged by Kabalevsky”—known for Gilels’ legendary, explosive performance—and the “Rhapsody,” which is quintessentially Kabalevsky.
