Antoine Charpentier was a leading composer of the early Versailles school, known for his numerous sacred works. In France from the late 16th century through the late 17th century, ballet was the dominant art form, while opera was considered a “crude art” and was unpopular. It was not until Lully, in collaboration with the playwright Molière, fused the two genres in the “comédie-ballet” and subsequently perfected the “musical tragedy” that opera can be said to have finally taken root in France. After Lully’s death, the style became lighter, and Charpentier, too, depicted his own unique world of love.
