Here, showcasing both of his talents to the fullest is Henri Siegfriedson, a young pianist born in 1974 who won the 2005 Beethoven International Piano Competition in Bonn. He says that for Symphony No. 5, he first studied the well-known Ekman arrangement and then added his own touches. He then tackled the notoriously difficult Symphony No. 2, infusing it with the same determination he had when Liszt arranged Beethoven’s symphonies: “to remain faithful to the original while pushing the limits of what is possible on the piano.” So, how did it turn out? The opening of Symphony No. 2 doesn’t originally have much sonic depth. So, to be honest, you might think, “This sounds a bit weak…” at first… but as the piece progresses, you’re bound to be swept up in excitement even greater than what you’d experience hearing it performed by a full orchestra.
