It’s full of energy right from the very first piece, “Marjatta.” Based on the Nordic epic “Kalevala,” Rautavaara himself adapted the text and crafted it into a one-act mystical drama. While a previous recording featuring Rautavaara’s own recitation was released on the BIS label, this performance has far more depth and is rendered with a much more striking richness. Furthermore, “The Carpenter’s Son,” as the title suggests, celebrates the joy of Jesus’ birth. The suite based on Lorca’s poetry is a relatively well-known work. The Tapio Choir masterfully performs all the other pieces as well—each based on folk songs but requiring modern harmonies and a crystalline sound.\n■ Tapio Choir\nA children’s choir renowned worldwide for its popularity and talent.
