Inspired by Eastern Orthodox religious paintings—icons—the original six pieces include “Death of the Mother of God,” “Two Village Saints,” “Black Madonna of Blakernaya,” “The Baptism of Christ,” “The Holy Women at the Sepulchre,” and “Archangel Michael Fighting the Antichrist” were arranged for orchestra. He added three “Prayer” movements in the middle and “Amen” as the finale, creating a work that aims to evoke religious exaltation throughout the entire piece. “A Tapestry of Life” is a work composed by Rautavaara after he miraculously recovered from a serious illness. It consists of four movements: “Stars Swarming,” “Halcyon Days,” “Sighs and Tears,” and “The Last Polonaise.” It was premiered on April 5, 2008, in Auckland by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Pietari Inkinen.
