But true to the genius Eschenbach, there’s a twist.\nThey perform “Gaspard de la Nuit”—which Ravel himself did not orchestrate— —which was orchestrated by the renowned French composer and conductor Marius Constant (1925–)—and to top it all off, they’ve gone to the trouble of reciting the prose poems by Aloysius Bertrand (1807–1841), on which the music is based, before each piece. Eschenbach’s attention to detail doesn’t stop there: as a bonus, the album includes the original piano version of “Ondine,” the first piece from “Gaspard de la Nuit,” performed by Zimon Bart—a pianist whom Eschenbach holds in extremely high regard—allowing listeners to compare it with the orchestral arrangement.\nNow, as for the performance itself—the heart of the matter—every single piece showcases Eschenbach at his very best. He keeps a watchful eye on even the finest details and pours every nerve into seeking out a keen sensitivity in every note of the music. As a result, even while using a French orchestra, we do not hear the crisp, bright, and exuberant Ravel, but rather the delicate poet Ravel, who is constantly immersed in a moist, melancholic depth lying just beyond the surface. Even the “Menuet à l’ancienne,” which is often dismissed as merely a stylish, pseudo-Baroque piece, possesses a beauty that leaves a thorn lodged deep in the heart. The “Pavane for a Dead Princess” is, needless to say, a masterpiece of a performance. The exhilaration unique to a live performance is also spot on.\nThe recitation is performed by French actress Carole Bouquet, who made a striking debut in *The Object of Desire* and is also known for her roles in the James Bond film *For Your Eyes Only* and, more recently, *WASABI*.\n\n・Ravel: *Gaspard de la Nuit* (orchestral arrangement by Marius Constant, including a recitation of Aloysius Bertrand’s poem)\n・Ravel: Suite “Le Tombeau de Couperin”\n・Ravel: Menuet à l’ancienne\n・Ravel: Pavane for a Dead Princess\n・Ravel: Morning Song of the Jester\n+ Bonus: Gaspard de la Nuit – Ondine\n\nChristoph Eschenbach (cond.)
