In 1977, he received the German Critics’ Prize for his recording of Schubert, marking a truly remarkable career. Many music fans will surely recall his monumental achievement of recording the complete Mozart sonatas and concertos for EMI. Since 2000, he has increasingly focused on conducting, taking up the post of music director of the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra and leaving behind a stunning new recording of Mozart’s complete piano concertos on the MDG label. Now, this beautiful Chopin recording, made with his trusted Lausanne Chamber Orchestra, is available on SACD! It is a magnificent album. Incidentally, in the liner notes (by Alan Newcomb) for the DG CD recording of Helmut Zacharias—a German national violinist and composer since before the war who was dubbed the “Magic Violin”—Christian Zacharias is listed as his son.
