Luigi Kherubini was praised as the best opera composer of his time and was respected by Beethoven. With the exception of one section of \"Medea\" sung by Maria Callas and the \"Symphony\" conducted by Toscanini, his works are rarely performed these days. The Swedish soprano Maria Bengtsson, who has recently been highly acclaimed throughout Europe, sings with smart but passionate singing. The tight ensemble under de Billy's direction, the polished detail and freshness of the performance make this an attractive disc.
