That said, I doubt anyone in the past could have even imagined performing the “Caprices”—considered among the most difficult pieces even when played on the original violin—on the saxophone. Double stops are played as genuine chords through the use of a technique called “multiphonic playing.” In addition, virtuosic techniques that seem almost superhuman—such as “circular breathing” and “slap tonguing”—are employed, making for a continuous stream of amazement right up until the very last moment of the performance.
