After serving as a clarinetist in various orchestras, he went on to enjoy a successful career as a soloist. Beginning in 1962, he began researching previously unknown repertoire that had lain dormant until then. In the 1960s, to revive various 18th- and 19th-century works for wind instruments, he founded the “Consortium Classicum,” comprising principal players from leading orchestras and professors from music conservatories, breathing new life into buried masterpieces by unearthing works and arrangements for wind instruments. The three pieces included here are by three composers active around the same time as Beethoven, and all feature virtuosic elements.
