AND A HUNTER WENT WALKING\" by Malian balafonist Neva Solo and donso ngoni player Benego Diakite.\n\n\n\nA DJINN AND A HUNTER WENT WALKING\" is an album by Neba Solo and Benego Diakite, two leading players of the balafon, a traditional Malian instrument similar to the marimba, and the donso ngoni, a hunter's harp. The album is co-produced by Nick Gold, Usman Haidara, and Sonny Johns. The album's sound is the acoustic instrumentation of Neva Solo and Benego Diakite, with vocals, percussion, and mellotron guitar strings adding color to the album.\n\n\n\nThe project for A DJINN AND A HUNTER WENT WALKING began more than a decade ago. Album co-producers Nick Gold and Usman Haidara first came up with the idea of combining the two instruments while preparing to record legendary singer Um Sangare's \"Seya\" for the world circuit.Despite their geographic cultural proximity, the instruments played by the Neba Solo and Diakite do not usually intersect. This is because the balafon is traditionally played to inspire farmers in the fields in Kenedug, where Neba Solo hails from, and in the Wassoulou region, where Diakite hails from, the culture is centered on hunting. Gold heard a balafon player at a restaurant in Bamako and intuited that his sound would harmonize with Sangare's records, so the two invited Neva Solo to join Seya's session. The budding balafon player hit it off with the band and developed a strong musical rapport with Diakite, a veteran of Donso Ngoni.Gold and Haidara sensed the chemistry that was brewing as the two improvised in the warm-up and urged them to explore further, resulting in the session that would later become A DJINN AND A HUNTER WENT WALKING. There, Neva Solo brought a custom-made balafon with extended bass range, and Diakite brought his most bass-sounding donso ngoni.
