This precious recording of the 1957 production at Covent Garden, conducted by Kubelik, has now been restored. With Blanche Seaborn as Dido, Vickers—hailed as the “Post-Delmonaco”—as Aeneas, and Amy Shuard, one of the 20th century’s leading British dramatic sopranos, as Cassandra, this production—featuring a stellar cast of singers—was a landmark event that paved the way for the revival of *Les Troyens* as a five-act opera. A full performance of *Les Troyens* took place in Karlsruhe in 1890, 21 years after Berlioz’s death, though this was a German-language production. Subsequently, in 1899, Part 1, “The Fall of Troy,” was staged at the Opéra de Paris. In 1921, a heavily abridged full-length version was performed at the same venue, and this recording captures the 1957 production of that version at London’s Covent Garden.
