The 1751 “Instrumental Songs (Canciones Instrumentales)” included here are written in a homophonic pre-Classical language that can be seen as a precursor to the “Lieder ohne Worte” later established by Mendelssohn; for this album, flutist Pau Cosó has arranged the pieces himself to suit the trio format.\nHaydn’s “London Trios,” on the other hand, were composed during his second stay in London in 1794, some 40 years later. These are sophisticated works written for entertainment at social gatherings, capitalizing on the appeal of the flute, which enjoyed immense popularity among British music lovers at the time.
