When the score was published, the two scherzo movements were omitted by the publisher, leaving a three-movement version, so this performance by Ballerini is a rare opportunity to hear the entire work before the score was published and before it was revised into Sonata No. 3. Italian pianist Luca Ballerini, born in 1965, studied at the Giovanni Battista Martini in his hometown of Bologna, and then at the Geneva Conservatory under Maria Tipo in the vein of Busoni and Casella.He won first prize at the 16th Senigallia International Piano Competition in 1987, second prize at the Giovanni Battista Viotti Competition in 1991, and third prize at the Gesa Anda International Piano Competition in 1994.
