The bassoonist Bram van Sambeek, whose series of releases for BIS continues, here takes on an all-Bach programme, playing on the bassoon solo works written for keyboard, flute and cello.\nThe most striking item is the Partita No. 2 in C minor BWV 826, which van Sambeek has arranged himself and multi-tracked as an octet. The impetus, he explains, came from the long months of the pandemic and from his love of ensemble playing: a desire to play beautiful music and real harmony. Multi-tracking is normally done to a metronome or click track, but that creates problems of nuance and phrasing, and welding eight parts into a genuinely rich ensemble is extremely difficult. He therefore composed a \"ninth part\" to serve as a framework: the fagotto hypothetico, or hypothetical bassoon. More than a mere bass line, it was essential for conveying the intricate interweaving of the voices and Bach's exquisite counterpoint. He recorded it first and listened to it while recording each of the other parts. The result is astonishing, as though eight van Sambeeks were enjoying playing together. \"This piece has come to symbolise the present disaster for me,\" he says of a performance given with everything he has. (The fagotto hypothetico is not heard on the finished recording, but part of its music is printed on the back of the booklet.)\nThe remaining three works, the French Suite No. 5 in G major BWV 816 (arr. T. Wind), the Partita in A minor for solo flute BWV 1013 (arr. Waterhouse) and the Cello Suite No. 1 in G major BWV 1007 (arr. van Sambeek), are arrangements for solo bassoon.
