On the other hand, however, musicians from the Middle East and North Africa have been actively embracing his music, and it is becoming an important part of their repertoire. Although Khachaturian’s music employs traditional Russian techniques, its spirit is Eastern in nature, which seems to resonate deeply with these musicians and inspire them to perform it.\n\nIn 1993, Jordanian pianist Iyad Sghael released a solo album (BISSA-2436) centered on Khachaturian’s Piano Sonata and “Album for the Young, No. 1,” which received high acclaim. On this album, he performs two concertos with the BBC Welsh Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Andrew Litton. The high-quality recording, characteristic of BIS, fully captures the subtleties of Khachaturian’s orchestration. The flexatone, specified in the second movement of the Piano Concerto, is effectively brought to life by South Korean cellist Lee Su-ah on the musical saw.\nAn added delight is the inclusion of the piano solo version (arranged by Dorkhanyan) of the “Masquerade” Suite, which features the waltz—one of the most popular pieces in Khachaturian’s oeuvre.\nSgayel’s exhilarating interpretation brings a breath of fresh air.\n\nYard Sgayel was born in Amman as a Jordanian Palestinian. After studying at the conservatory in her hometown, she began studying at Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester at the age of 15, and later at the Royal Northern College of Music under Murray McLachlan, Martino Tirimo, and others.
