Rautavaara (1928-2016)
Description:
Co-commissioned by the Helsinki Festival and the Finnish Orthodox Church. SACD hybrid disc of Rautavaara's "Vigilia" for mixed chorus. Rautavaara's "Vigilia" (All Night Vigil in Memory of St. John the Baptist) was co-commissioned by the Helsinki Festival and the Finnish Orthodox Church. It consists of the first part (Evening Prayer (Ehtoopalvelus/Vespers)), which begins with "Oh come, let us praise God" and Psalm 103 "Praise the Lord, O my soul", and the second part (Morning Prayer (Aamupalvelus/Matins)) from "Glory be to the Holy Trinity" to "The Last Blessing". The music was composed in a style close to the Byzantine chant tradition, with thick choral writing, microtones, whisper voices, and glissandos. According to Rautavaara, the inspiration for the piece came from childhood memories of a visit to the Valamo Monastery on Lake Ladoga just before the "Winter War" of 1939. Originally composed for liturgical use, the Evening Prayer was premiered at the Uspenski Cathedral in 1971 and the Morning Prayer in 1972, followed by a "concert version" in 1996.Both the first CD recording by the Finnish Radio Chamber Choir and the new recording by Schwekendijk and the Helsinki Chamber Choir are based on this concert version. Nile Correll, who was born in Dublin, Ireland and studied at the Sibelius Academy with Jorma Hunninen and Tom Krause, sings tenor solo, sings in the University of Helsinki Male Chorus (YL) and other Finnish choral groups, and is a founding member of the vocal ensemble "Club For Five". One of its members, Tuuka Haapaniemi (1978-), sings bass solo. King International
