Ronald Brautigam, the prodigious pianist. This disc features Mendelssohn’s piano concertos. Accompanying him, of course, is the Cologne Academy, led by Michael Alexander Vilens. The dense ensemble playing combined with Brautigam’s supple interpretation of Mendelssohn can be summed up in one word: exquisite. The instrument used is a replica of an 1830 Pleyel, crafted by Paul McNulty in 2010. Regarding the use of a piano crafted by McNulty for this performance and recording, Brautigam remarked, “McNulty not only studies old instruments and recreates them anew, but when I play the replicas he has made, I also gain some fresh inspiration in terms of musical interpretation.” It is clear that by using an instrument that is both new and in optimal condition—as envisioned by Brautigam—they create a very natural atmosphere. The solid interpretation by Brautigam and the Cologne Academy, led by Willens, was clearly demonstrated in Mozart’s piano concertos as well. Mendelssohn’s pianism, while more Classical in style compared to Liszt or Chopin, is grounded in rigorous finger training, making it challenging and daunting—there’s no room for cutting corners. Yet the prodigious Brautigam weaves music that is perfect and brimming with clarity even in this composer’s works. The exquisite phrasing of Mendelssohn’s uniquely beautiful melodies is simply masterful, allowing you to lose yourself in a moment of pure bliss.
