Viktor Suslin was born in 1942. He pursued an avant-garde style during the Soviet era, forming the improvisational ensemble “Astraea” with Gubaidulina and others. He defected to West Germany in 1981 and remains active there today. This album features a collection of works employing quasi-classical techniques, reminiscent of his fellow composer Shostakovich in aspects such as his use of the harpsichord. His recent work, “1756,” was composed as a required piece for the 6th Leopold Mozart Violin Competition held in 2005 and was later dedicated to the performer, Nurit Stark. The title refers to the year of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s birth and features quotations from the introduction to the String Quartet “Dissonances,” K. 465, and the Lacrimosa from the Requiem.\n\nViolinist Nurit Stark, born in 1979, is an up-and-coming Israeli artist.
