Raised in a poor household by an alcoholic, abusive father and a deeply religious mother, he went on to become a professional composer. While suffering from the lack of understanding from those around him and rheumatoid arthritis, he developed a harrowing musical style that could be described as “autobiographical music.” Symphony No. 4 was composed in 1959 and, like most of Pettason’s symphonies, takes the form of a single movement, lasting a full 37 and a half minutes. It is relatively traditional, with the dark, pathological elements characteristic of his later works not yet fully pronounced. The chorale-like motif is based on a Salvation Army hymn sung by his mother, though Pettason noted that it did not depict any specific point in his life. His Sixteenth Symphony, composed in 1979 and his final symphony, is also a single-movement work lasting about 27 minutes, taking on a concerto-like character with an alto saxophone solo.\nThe saxophone solo demands virtuosic technique, and Jürgen Pettason—a darling of the contemporary music scene—delivers a breathtaking performance. Although this was composed during the very final years of his life, when he was battling illness, the sense of heavenly salvation is deeply moving.\n\nThe strange contrast between this cheerful, upbeat piece and Lindberg’s usual style creates a tension akin to vertigo.
