On his previous release for the BIS label, Barber’s Cello Concerto (BISSA1827), he helped listeners rediscover the work’s appeal through his overwhelming technical skill and rich expressiveness. This highly anticipated new recording features works by Walton and Hindemith.\n\nWalton and Hindemith were close friends; since Hindemith conducted the world premiere of Walton’s Viola Concerto in October 1929, they maintained a strong friendship and held mutual respect for one another as musicians. The cello concertos included here were both dedicated to Piatigorsky. Walton’s Cello Concerto was premiered during a Boston Symphony Orchestra subscription concert conducted by Charles Munch and subsequently gained widespread recognition through Piatigorsky’s performances. Hindemith’s Cello Concerto (1940), on the other hand, was composed in the year he emigrated to the United States to escape the war, and its premiere took place the following February 1941 under the baton of Serge Koussevitzky. You can enjoy these two representative 20th-century cello concertos through Portella’s steady technique and outstanding expression.\n\nThis album also includes unaccompanied cello works by both composers.
