This release features selections from “Cantatas from the Leipzig Period, 1730s–1740s,” including Cantata No. 100, “God’s Works Are Truly Good” (BWV 100), No. 14, “If God Were Not with Us at This Time,” BWV 14; No. 197, “God Is Our Sure Hope,” BWV 197; and “Glory to the Most High God,” BWV 197a [fragment]. Enjoy these masterpieces from Bach’s Leipzig period—the height of his artistic maturity—performed by the BCJ.\n\n★ “How Good Are the Works of God” (BWV 100) was composed for the 15th or 21st Sunday after Trinity; its premiere is believed to have taken place around 1734, with a subsequent performance around 1742. It is the final work among the three cantatas (the others being BWV 98 and BWV 99) based on the St. Rodi chorale. This six-movement work features a very brilliant opening and closing movement, both highlighted by timpani and trumpets, with beautiful arias and duets in between.\n\n★ No. 14, “If God Were Not with Us at This Time” (BWV 14), is a five-movement work composed for the Fourth Sunday after Epiphany, and is believed to have premiered in 1735. Based on Luther’s chorale of the same name, this chorale cantata is believed to be the last of Bach’s extant works for which he composed all movements from scratch. It is, so to speak, the most mature and densely composed of Bach’s cantatas, demonstrating an astonishing mastery of technique, particularly evident in the opening movement.\n\n★ No. 197, “God Is Our Sure Hope” (BWV 197), was composed around 1736–1737. Composed of two parts and ten movements, it is a large-scale wedding cantata.
