While Brautigam is known for his lively and clear-cut approach, his interpretation of Beethoven in this series is true to the works’ historical context, capturing the spirit of the era.\n\nThe instruments used are period replicas: three fortepianos crafted by Paul McNulty. Regarding his use of McNulty’s instruments for performance and recording, Brautigam states, “McNulty not only researches old instruments and recreates them anew, but playing the replicas he crafts also provides fresh inspiration for my musical interpretation.” It is clear that by using the instruments he envisions as being in the best possible condition, he creates an extremely natural atmosphere. This can truly be called the definitive recording of Beethoven’s complete piano sonatas on the fortepiano.
