It is not unusual for small orchestras to perform Brahms' symphonies, but Dausgaard is not just concerned with the clarity of vision and athleticism. Of course, the tone is clean and free of Brahms's characteristic smokiness, but the music-making is big and moving, including the surprisingly profound first movement and finale. The coupling is Brahms' own orchestration (without voices) of nine pieces from his famous \"Love Songs,\" which are famous as piano pieces with voices. Since there are surprisingly few recordings of these pieces, they are very welcome.
