The Emperor Quartet, one of Britain’s most promising young ensembles, presents the second installment of their collection of string quartets by Benjamin Britten, one of the 20th century’s leading British composers.\n\n★String Quartet No. 1 in D major, Op. 25, was composed in 1941. After being selected several times for the International Festival of Contemporary Music, Britten traveled to the United States, and the work was premiered in Los Angeles. This was not a particularly good period for Britten; although his operetta *Paul Bunyan* had premiered, it did not receive favorable reviews, and he essentially “fled” from New York to California. The style was striking and highly fantastical for its time; the opening features each part sustaining notes at different pitches for several measures, gradually evolving as they stretch out in whole tones. This is followed by a dynamic melody in the first violins, with the various parts intertwining amidst dissonant harmonies. This work, composed when Britten was 28, combines intensity and beauty.\n\n★On the other hand, String Quartet No. 3, Op. 94, was composed in 1975, toward the end of his career. Commissioned by the Amadeus String Quartet, it consists of five movements in the structure slow–fast–slow–fast–slow. Composed immediately after the opera *Death in Venice*, the work as a whole serves as a tribute to Mahler. Its sound and structure are reminiscent of Shostakovich’s string quartets, expressing the worldview of Britten’s later years.\n\n★The Emperor Quartet, a promising young ensemble from the UK, captivates with its lively dynamism and meticulous ensemble playing. The first volume in the Britten String Quartet Collection (BISSA1540) features the String Quartet No. 2 in C major, Three Divertimenti (1936), a Petite Suite (1929), String Quartet in D Major (1931\/74)), as well as the Martinů String Quartets (BIS1389) and collections of string quartets by Beemish and Beethoven (BIS1511).
