At the request of his widow, Alexander Laskatov deciphered and reconstructed the manuscript. While there is a Davis recording on Universal, Hughes’s interpretation is equally compelling. This is the world premiere recording of an intriguing version of Shostakovich’s “Concerto Grosso No. 1”—one of his masterpieces—featuring added flute and oboe parts. Sharon Bézailly’s performance is also generating a lot of buzz.
