Offenbach, known today for operas such as *The Tales of Hoffmann*, *Orpheus in the Underworld (Heaven and Hell)*, and *La Belle Hélène*, was so skilled on the cello—which he began playing at age nine—that he was hailed during his lifetime as the “Paganini of the cello.” Unsatisfied with existing repertoire, he composed this piece for his own performance repertoire; the popular song “Jacqueline’s Tears” is also his composition.
