In addition to Poulenc, the program included Saint-Saëns’s Concertos No. 2 and No. 5, as well as Gershwin’s Concerto in E-flat major. Additionally, the “Overture” recorded during a stop in Tours on the way from Oedeburg to a tour of Hungary the previous month had previously been released on several labels. In both of Richter’s Poulenc recordings, the lighthearted and sophisticated style—which bears a resemblance to his performances of Prokofiev—matches the spirit of the music so perfectly that it is nothing short of exhilarating.\nIn stark contrast, his performance of Reger with the renowned Borodin Quartet—with whom he frequently collaborated in chamber music—features a magnificent, rich blend of sounds. Composed shortly after Reger settled in Munich, this work represents a mature period in his career; his virtuosity is evident in the piano part’s exquisite phrasing, offering ample opportunities for Richter to showcase his artistry at the height of his career.
