She won first prize at the 2009 Netherlands International Violin Competition (Oscar Bach Competition), and the Grand Prize at the 2014 Freiburg International Violin Competition. In 2015, she was also a prize winner at the historic Queen Elisabeth International Music Competition. Currently, she is active as one of the most prominent young musicians in the Netherlands, having been loaned the 1727 Stradivarius “Barrere”—a legendary instrument that Janine Jansen cherished for 15 years—by the Elise Mathilde Foundation.

For her sixth album on ChannelClassics, she realized a long-held dream: during the COVID-19 pandemic, she formed an ensemble of top Dutch musicians and recorded Haydn’s Violin Concerto and an arranged version of Stravinsky’s Divertimento using the “Play & Direct” method. Philippens often performs this unique pairing of Haydn and Stravinsky—which at first glance might seem unlikely—and describes them as a wonderful match due to the candor, lightness, intelligence, and, in particular, the humor found in the small final movements of each piece.

Formed in December 2020 in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, “The Vondel Strings” consists largely of former students of two renowned Dutch teachers, Kosie Weisenbeek and Vera Bess (Philippens himself was also a student of Weisenbeek and Beth). The ensemble has inherited Vera Beth’s passion for distinctive performance, and its name is taken from “TheVondel,” the affectionate nickname for the house on Vondelstraat in Amsterdam where she lived and taught until recently with her husband, Anner Bilsma.
Tokyo M-Plus

Tracklisting:

1.Violin Concerto No. 4 in G Major, Hob.
