In the summer of 2007, he participated as principal trombonist with the Abbado \u0026amp; Lucerne Festival Orchestra, delivering a breathtaking solo in the first movement of Mahler’s “Symphony No. 3” that earned him worldwide acclaim; van Rijen, a leading figure in the trombone world, continues to gain momentum.\nFollowing his previous album (CCSSA26708), which showcased the sound of a genuine “sackbut,” this third recording marks Ryen’s return to the “trombone.” The program is particularly noteworthy for its richness, featuring standards of the trombone repertoire—such as works by Martin, Jongen, and Goubert—in a duo with the virtuoso Giacometti, as well as “Castellade” in a duo with Frits Damrow, principal trumpet of the Concertgebouw Orchestra.
