Dexter Gordon

30 years after Dexter Gordon's death, a previously unreleased performance at Café Montmartre in Copenhagen, a familiar place for Dexter Gordon, was made into a work. Dexter Gordon (1923-1990), a giant of modern jazz tenor who greatly influenced Sonny Rollins and John Coltrane. To commemorate the 30th anniversary of his death, the prestigious Danish label "Storyville" is proud to present a super high level of previously unreleased recordings! The recording was made in 1964 at the jazz club "Cafe Montmartre" in Copenhagen. This is a performance from the period when Dexter was a contracted artist for Blue Note Records in Europe and the United States. Discographically speaking, this recording was made the year after he recorded the historical masterpiece "Our Man in Paris," and that alone should tell you that he was at the height of his powers. While "Our Man in Paris" reunited Dexter with Bud Powell, Kenny Clarke, and others from the 40's, this album features sessions with Tete Montreux, Niels Pedersen, and Alex Riehl, who were all up-and-coming musicians representing European jazz of the time in 1964. This album is a session with Tete Montreux, Niels Pedersen, and Alex Riehl.Inspired by the next generation of musicians, Dexter's performance is unstoppable. The songs he performs are all long-awaited by his fans. The Blue Note version of "Cheese Cake," familiar from "Go! and "Carnival Morning," which he would record in the studio for Blue Note a year later. The bluesy "Big Fat Butterfly" showcases the depth of Pedersen's voice, and the sound quality of the July 20 session is so crisp and clear that it is hard to believe that it was recorded in 1964. The 18-year-old Pedersen's prodigious bass playing, in particular, is so powerful that it is not an exaggeration to say that it rivals the masterful performance on Sahib Shihab's "Sahib's Jazz Party" album. Café Montmartre" was a jazz club with which Dexter Gordon had a particularly close relationship, and the Black Lion release "The Montmartre Collection" (1967) and the Steeplechase release "The Meeting" (1973), recorded live there, are well known as must-have masterpieces for fans. The Meeting" (1973) are well-known as must-have masterpieces for fans.Montmartre 1964" will be the perfect year-end gift for Dexter fans and modern jazz lovers alike.
