His music, which seeks to communicate with the listener without compromising its artistic integrity, has won wide support, and commissions from orchestras and ensembles in many countries continue to come his way. This new Kleiberg release from 2L - the label behind his opera David and Bathsheba (2L 084SABD) and his Mass for Modern Man (2L 136SABD) - is a concerto album, following the Grammy-nominated Treble and Bass (2L 59SACD). Three works, new and old, are performed by the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra under Peter Szilvay.\n\nThe Violin Concerto No. 2 was written for a concert given at the Stavanger Concert Hall in celebration of the 80th birthday of the painter Kjell Pahr-Iversen (b. 1937). Its three movements take their titles from Pahr-Iversen's paintings: I. Ikon (Icon), II. Don Quixote's Army, III. The Gates Unfold.\n\nDopo was written in 1993 under the powerful impression of the war then raging in the Balkans. Its title - Italian for \"after\" - points to the painful fact that \"barely fifty years after the Holocaust, the term 'ethnic cleansing' had once again entered our everyday vocabulary\". It was the first of Kleiberg's \"Holocaust trilogy\" to be composed, preceding Lamento: Cissi Klein in memoriam (Aurora ACD 5032) and the Requiem - for the Victims of Nazi Persecution (Simax PSC 1257), and the Polish composer Penderecki has also taken it up as a conductor.\n\nThe Viola Concerto was written for Eivind Ringstad and the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra. Inspired by Edvard Munch's painting cycle The Dance of Life, it consists of three movements of contrasting character.
